Point in Time Count (PIT)

Annually, every CoC in the nation performs a Point-in-Time (PIT) Count of all people experiencing homelessness in a shelter and on the street in the last 10 days of January. The PIT count offers the ability to monitor trends in homelessness across a geography, support local efforts in ending homelessness by identifying unmet needs and characteristics of persons experiencing homelessness, and identify areas where the development of housing and supportive service programs is needed. The PIT count is reliant on volunteer and agency participation. If you or your agency have an interest in taking part in the PIT count please email pit@wvceh.org

The 2026 Point-in-Time Count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 28th, 2026 beginning at 4:00 pm and ending on Thursday, January 29th, 2026 at 3:59 pm.

Important PIT Count Date Update

Update: The 2026 WV Balance of State Point in Time Count has been rescheduled.

Due to severe winter weather across the Balance of State, including significant snow and ice, prolonged extremely cold temperatures, power outages in some areas, and a declared state of emergency in West Virginia, the PIT Count originally scheduled for January 28 and 29, 2026 will now take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 beginning at 4:00 pm and ending on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at 3:59 pm.

This change was made to ensure the safety of participants, staff, and volunteers and to support an accurate unsheltered count. All PIT activities should align with the new date.

WVCEH has created a Volunteer Sign-Up form to help us during the count. If you are interested in volunteering in your county, this form can be found at our volunteer portal

Prior to the night of the count, volunteers are also asked to complete the Volunteer Release Form. This electronic form can be found below as well as the volunteer training.
